“Designing costumes is story telling... in a physical, intimate way. As costume designers we get under a character’s skin the way an actor does.”

- Jeffrey Kurland

Investigating the complex natures of people and their relationship to the world around them is what captivates my curiosity as a designer. Coupled with a deep-set passion for costume, I am focused on growing my understanding for the design not only of costume, but of character.

In my final year at Te Kura Toi Whakaari O Aotearoa New Zealand Drama School, I scrutinised the role of the costume designer in close relationship to the performer and the director.

Through a series of predominently filmic projects, I invested heavily in jamming around character conception, casting, testing in rehearsal room and manifesting the full character on set. Strengthened and excited by this work, I desire to innovate relationships  in future projects.

I am continuing this investigation as I prepare for an independent feature film next year. My focus is toward building a strong connection between the two central characters, and their isolation from the  world around them.
